I’m pretty sure that you know I’m a huge geek already, so I’ve decided to share some of my favourite little geeky things. (Obviously, there are a whole lot of other things that I like to do, but here are my favourite things to geek out on ❤ )

1. The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings

LotR is actually one epic novel, not a trilogy, as most people think it is! There are just so many things to love. There’s the rich world of Middle Earth, not only because it provides a convincing escape, but also the characters are so interesting and you can learn something from each of them. The soundtracks to the films are stunning, and the books are masterpieces of fictional writing! And of course, Orlando Bloom.

2. Awesome Tech Stuff

3. Science!

Leads to awesome tech stuff, but just figuring out how and why stuff works is great too. Scientific reality can be stranger than we’ve ever imagined!

4. Studio Ghibli

They are an animation studio, but don’t let that put you off! Their films are suitable for everyone of all ages, and their characters are so convincing and cute at the same time. My favourite film of theirs has to be Princess Mononoke, which touches on many problems that are still relevant today, like industrialisation, whilst still being super entertaining.

5. Reading Blogs

It’s so interesting to see what sort of thoughts everyone else has, and the great thing about this community is that we can support other bloggers!

6. Sherlock

The only TV show I’m willing to give up my time for. Great plot, great characters and great acting – the icing on the cake is that it’s thoroughly British. Oh, and Benedict Cumberbatch 😉

7. Reading

Recently I haven’t been reading a lot, mostly due to the sheer amount of work I need to get done….

But when I have free time, I don’t have a particular genre of books that I only like to read – my favourite have to be detective novels (especially featuring Agatha Christie’s Poirot), YA (like Divergent, the Hunger Games etc.) and coming-of-age novels (sort of overlap with YA – like John Green’s books. My favourite of his has to be Paper Towns, which is quite metaphorical but you can also just enjoy it on the surface layer of the plot).

Also, popular science and maths books like How to Teach Quantum Physics to Your Dog by Chad Orzel are pretty fun to read too!

8. Smart Videos

I’ve made a blog of my favourite Youtubers already – check it out here. I like procrastinating by convincing myself that what I’m doing will make me more educated on other things…

9. Classical Music

Both playing and listening to it. It’s classic for a reason! Here’s a video of my best friend Sophie Westbrooke, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2014 Finalist, talking at a TEDx event. Her recorder playing is just heavenly, so much more than the primary school squeaky noises that we’re accustomed to hearing!

10. Rubik’s Cubing

Basically, the geekiest thing I could ever get into. I learnt how to solve it last summer when I was bored in China, and now I’ve forgotten some of the algorithms, but it’s still so satisfying when you see the same coloured squares all on one side.

11. Chess

Again, made a post about how great chess is. It feeds my competitive spirit, and I meet awesome people! Btw putting in another plug for my friend Michael’s chess streams – his first game here is so fluky!

12. Awesome Stationery

You know that feeling when you buy something beautiful? I get that with stationery that makes me happy. Stationery is also really useful!

13. Pokémon Go

For all you Pokémon Go ‘haters’ out there, I think you’re missing out on a great game. Sure, it’s not perfect (nothing is) but the concept behind it is awesome and it’s the only way to drag my brother out of bed in the morning to go for a run with me.

It brings people together, and it’s a great way to explore the outdoors! When I play, I try to make sure my head is up more than looking down at my phone, so that I appreciate going outside at the same time.

14. Planning and Organising

I’m one of those people who likes stuff being well-organised. Minimalism makes me happy! Also, seeing how my precious time will be used laid out in front of me in a calendar or notebook makes me more motivated to do stuff.

15. Those ‘WHOA’ Moments

When you’ve been working on a puzzle for ages. When you’ve been pondering a problem. When you’ve been racking your brains for a connection. And then suddenly –

*WHOA*

It all clicks. Falls into place. Everything makes sense.

And then you’re addicted to that feeling.
